Ask a Local: Olympic Sailing in Weymouth

The Olympic sailing and Paralympic sailing events will be hosted in Weymouth & Portland, Dorset.

We are edging ever closer to the opening of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games and plenty of exciting developments are happening here in Weymouth & Portland in preparation of hosting the Olympic sailing events.

Three Olympic sailors Kate Macgregor, Annie Lush and Lucy Macgregor helped mark the start of building work recently on a viewing tower at Weymouth seafront. The £3.5m tower will overlook the Olympic Festival Village and provide a 360 degree view of the town, the stunning Jurassic coastline, harbour and surrounding area. It will be a great addition to the area and you will be able to see it standing tall from our guest lounge once it’s completed in early July 2012.

Weymouth Esplanade has also been a focus of redevelopment of late. A £2.5 Million rejuvenation of the area has been well underway this past year including the Victorian shelters being restored, the historic Jubilee Clock has been repainted, and the pavements widened to make attractive sitting out areas to soak up the ambience along the beach front.

And it doesn’t finish there. The planned improvements for the front will also include world class artists Vong Phaophanit & Claire Obussier contributing to contemporary lighting columns resulting in impressive laser illuminations that will span across the sands and Weymouth Bay at night.

In celebration of Weymouth & Portland hosting the London 2012 Olympic Sailing events, Maritime Mix – London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea will be animating the area with a full array of cultural delights; from world class outdoor theatre by the likes of Cirque Bijou, open-air mass choir performances, visual arts, multi-media arts festivals, to panoramic video projections, participative music, dance & celebrations there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the events take inspiration from its unique setting, England’s only natural World Heritage site the Jurassic Coast. It is a favourite haunt for many holiday makers including walkers, water sports enthusiasts and fossil hunters!

This will be Dorset’s largest creative celebration producing over 80 inspirational events spanning across 6 months, with the majority of the activity happening right here in Weymouth. The celebrations have already started so why not book your stay at BB Weymouth with us today to make the most of your next coastal getaway during this unique festival period.
