Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria) Seaside, Coast and Beaches

Barrow-in-Furness, commonly known as Barrow, is a town in Cumbria. At the tip of the Furness peninsula, close to the Lake District, on the north-western edge of Morecambe Bay, south of the Duddon Estuary and east of the Irish Sea.

The town is sheltered from the Irish Sea by Walney Island, a 22.5 km (14 mile) long island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Other islands which lie close to Barrow are Piel Island, whose castle protected the harbour, Sheep Island, Roa Island and Foulney Island. Walney Island hosts a number of beaches but as the town sits on a peninsula all 3 sides host some beaches.

Barrow has played a vital role in global ship and submarine construction for over 125 years. Although it is at the end of a peninsula, Barrow is only around 20 minutes from the Lake District, and has been referred to as a "gateway to the lakes" and "where the lakes meets the sea".
