Explore Weymouth Beaches and Coastline

Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, located on the western shore of Weymouth Bay and on the mouth of the River Wey. Weymouth's coast and beaches, lakes, museums, aquarium, shopping centres and watersports attract visitors all year round. Two notable landmarks around Weymouth are:

  • The small limestone Isle of Portland is only 6 km (4 miles) long and 2.7 km (1.7 miles) wide and it is joined to the mainland by Chesil Beach.
  • Chesil Bank Beach a major shingle bank which provides shelter from the prevailing winds and waves for the town of Weymouth.
Weymouth Harbour is on the English Channel and is used for pleasure boats, private yachts and ferries to the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Brittany in France. The nearby Portland Harbour is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world and is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, and is where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held.
