The Castle of St John is an early 16th-century L-plan tower house, built by the Adairs of Kilhilt around 1510. Over the centuries it has been used as a home, a court, a police station, a military garrison, and a Victorian prison. The castle is now a museum. Read more…
Cardoness Castle is a 15th Century tower house just south-west of Gatehouse of Fleet. It was originally owned by the MacCulloch family of Galloway also known as the MacCullochs of Myreton. Broughton House was the home and studio of E A Hornel, one of the famous early 20th-century ‘Glasgow Boys’. The house today is a beautiful living museum dedicated to Hornel’s life and work.
