Red Castle

Red Castle sits on high ground and is the ruins of a 12th-century castle that had a keep added in the 1300s. The original castle was built by the Barclays William the Lyon (William I) used the castle while hunting and it stayed in royal hands until given by Robert the Bruce to the 6th Earl of Ross in 1328, it later passed to the Stewart Lord Innermeath, and then to the Beatons.

The castle was attacked, sacked and burnt by Protestants in 1579, 1580 and 1581. Although it survived these attacks and remained in use until about 1748, and partially roofed until the 1770s.

The castle is located about halfway along Lunan Bay and a most spectacular beach.

Access to the castle is possible but should be approached carefully as the remains are unstable.
