The Bristol Hippodrome is over one hundred years old now having been opened in 1912!
It is a wonderful example of late Victorian architecture designed by Frank Matcham, a renown theatre architect.
The theatre was acclaimed for the enormous water tank that used to be in front of the stage. It could be filled in a minute with 100,000 gallons of water which enabled the theatre to stage fantastical shows including aquatics! There was a glass screen that could be raised to protect the orchestra and those in the front Stalls from the splashing!
Sadly, this has gone now but the dome in the roof is still there but not often used.
As one of the biggest theatre stages in the United Kingdom, the Hippodrome is now well established as the place for to see all the major musical productions on tour like ‘Cats’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ as well as Opera, ballet, concerts and the circus!
After a matinee you might fancy a bit of shopping or a meal at one of the cities many superb restaurants.
