Auckland Castle (Durham)
- Information
Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace and locally as the Bishop’s Castle or Bishop’s Palace has a thousand years of historic connection with England’s only prince-bishop: granted exceptional powers by Norman kings, the Bishop of Durham remained virtual monarch in his diocese right up to the 19th century.
The castle in appearance looks like a Gothic stately home than a medieval fortification, and today remains a working episcopal palace.
