Herstmonceux Castle is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England. Work started on this brick castle in 1441, brick was an unusual material for a castle due it’s weakness over stone, hence it was more of a fortified house than a true castle. Thus, the builders of Herstmonceux Castle concentrated more on grandeur and comfort than on defence to produce a truly magnificent estate.
