Harlech Castle (Gwynedd)
Harlech Castle was built (1283-1295) on a vertical cliff-face and has two rings of walls and towers with a very strong eastern gatehouse. A 200 foot stone staircase led from the sea up the cliff face to the castle allowing supplies to enter from the sea.
In the war of the roses (1461-1468) the castle was siege proving Edward I’s walls were a formidable asset of the castle.
Harlech Castle is within The Castles and Town Walls of King Edward UNESCO World Heritage Site.
