Cathcart Square was the heart of Greenock back in the day for commercial, civic and religious activities:

The church, known locally as the ‘Toon Kirk’ was built in 1760 with its 146-foot high steeple added in 1787
The ornate Lyle central fountain was gifted to the town by Provost Abram Lyle in 1880
The Clydesdale Bank building, now known as The Square was built in 1899 by architect James Thomson
