Whitby Abbey was founded in 657 and is located high on a cliff to the east of the Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby. The abbey was in use until1539 when Henry VIII ordered Whitby Abbey to close as part of the dissolution of the monasteries.
Whilst visiting the Abbey you get some of the best views of the town and coast. There is parking near the Abbey but for those who are energetic, you can climb the 199 steps to the Abbey noting that it is customary to count the steps as you climb.
The visitor centre and shop is housed in a 17th-century mansion. Inside you’ll find a new museum that tells the story of the abbey. You also have a coffee shop and the abbey has a wheelchair route with ramps for access to the ruins.
The Abbey were the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic tale of ‘Dracula’.
