Standing Stones of Stenness

The Standing Stones of Stenness is a Neolithic monument on the Mainland, the largest island of the Orkney Isles. Dating back to around 3100 BC, this ancient stone circle is among the earliest henge sites in the British Isles, making it a vital part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation also includes other nearby Neolithic sites, such as the Ring of Brodgar, Maes Howe, and Skara Brae, reflecting the area’s significant archaeological value.

The monument is thought to have consisted of up to 12 tall stones, about 32 m (104 ft) in diameter, although only four remain standing today. These are set within a henge, a circular ditch and a bank.

Standing at the bridge between the Stenness Loch and the Harray Loch, the Watch Stone is a solitary megalith over 5 meters (16 feet) high. It marks the approach to the Stenness circle and may have been part of a processional route linking the Stenness and Brodgar sites.

Excavations at the Standing Stones of Stenness have provided insight into the Neolithic people of Orkney. The site is considered an important ceremonial and social gathering place, with evidence of domestic dwellings and artefacts suggesting it was part of a larger, inhabited area.
