Porthkidney Sands Beach

Porthkidney Sands is a breathtakingly wide sandy beach near St Ives in Cornwall. Nestled at the mouth of the Hayle Estuary, sand dunes frame this expansive beach and offer stunning views across St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse. Porthkidney Sands is known for being a dog-friendly beach and tranquil setting, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat away from St. Ives’s more crowded, dog-restricted beaches.

At low tide, the beach stretches for over a mile, and behind it, a system of sand dunes offers shelter and an interesting landscape to explore.

Visitors to St. Ives often overlook the beach, which we believe is a big mistake, accessed from the southwest coast path from the sand dunes or some broken steps at Hawkes Point towards the beach’s northern end. Note that the steps at Hawkes Point get cut off as the tide comes in, so you may need to wade back or take the longer coast path accessed through the dunes.

This is a dog lovers paradise for those on holiday in the St Ives area. Unlike many other beaches in Cornwall with seasonal dog bans, Porthkidney Sands welcomes dogs year-round, is never busy, and is the perfect location to avoid the daytime seasonal restrictions at the main St Ives beaches.

The beach is separated from Hayle Beach by a narrow strip of water leading to Hayle Harbour. Bathing anywhere near the river estuary is dangerous as the currents can be extremely strong, and the safe swimming area is marked.

There are no facilities, although a seasonal lifeguard is located at the Hayle estuary’s south end of the beach. They occasionally drive along the whole beach on their quad bikes.

There is a small car park on Wharf Road, Lelant, or some on-road parking near Lelant church, with access over/around the dunes and golf course. You can also take the short coastal path walk from Carbis Bay.
