Folkestone is a harbour town on the English Channel, in the south east corner of Kent, with the coast of France, a mere 39 km (24 miles) away. The seaside town lies on the southern edge of the North Downs in a valley between two cliffs. The harbour usage has reduced in part due to the Channel tunnel taking away ferries to France. There are two south-facing beaches in Folkestone either side of the harbour. Sunny Sands is to the east whilst Lower Leas Coastal Park is to the west.
