1 Review on “Adonis Pool (Isle of Sark)”

This roughly rectangular pool is accessed via a scramble down the overlooking headland and faces west, catching the afternoon sun throughout the summer and autumn. The pool lies in the centre of a detached rock formation which is separated from the headland by a race of water into which is set a large boulder, the traditional method used to cross to the rock at half water. The Adonis Pool fills with fresh water at the high tide. It is about eighteen to twenty feet deep and the size of a reasonable domestic swimming pool, allowing lengths to be swum in comfort. Sunbathing and resting on the surrounding ledges and flats is easy. There are two alternative methods to gain access to the Adonis rock if jumping across on the boulder does not appeal: one can either swim round to the seaward side and scramble up onto the rock on its shallow side, facing the Moie de Bretagne (the off-lying rock shaped like a sea monster) or one can, in some states of the tide, swim up the gully and enter the poll from the rear. This second method is not to be attempted when the tide is running.

On a sunny summer afternoon the water in the Adonis Pool warms up pleasantly, an advantage over the Venus Pool, which goes into shade after lunchtime. Additionally, it has not suffered any filling from rock falls over the years, and is suitable for diving and plunging. There is a naturist tradition at the pool which some may want to enjoy.

Care should be taken scrambling down the headland, and it should not be attempted without a guide for the first few visits, nor at all after rain has made the pathways slippery. There is no handrail or any other form of assistance.
