Nestled on Wales’s west coast, Sker Beach, often called Kenfig Sands, offers a quieter alternative to the busier seaside spots nearby. It’s the most westerly stretch of Porthcawl’s coastline, backed by the wild, shifting dunes of the Kenfig National Nature Reserve (a Site of Special Scientific Interest).
Long, flat sands, gentle seas, and a true sense of solitude make this a special place. Perfect for walkers, bird-watchers, dog owners, and anyone seeking a bit of peace and open sky. Tourists often miss this sandy beach, which we think is a big shame and should be on the list of any visit to Porthcawl.
This is one of South Wales’s most peaceful walking spots and is dog-friendly. If you’ve got a few hours, start at Rest Bay and follow the coast path to Sker. Wander along the beach towards Sker Point, then cut back through the dunes into the nature reserve. Finish your day with a coffee overlooking the sea back in Porthcawl.
No direct road access, which is part of Sker’s charm. You have two main walking routes:
- Along the Wales Coast Path from Rest Bay (around 40 mins).
- From Kenfig National Nature Reserve via dune paths (around 25โ30 mins).
Sker Beach allows dogs all year round and is an excellent spot for enjoying long beach walks.
