The Towans refers to a 4 mile stretch of beach and each individual area of the dunes behind the beach have their own identities. The individual areas include: Hayle Towans, Black Cliff, Riviere Towans, Mexico Towans, Common Towans, Phillack Towans, Upton Towans and Gwithian Towans.
The Towans mix of sand, sand dune and grassland has a wide variety of wildlife and plants and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Some dunes rise to more than 50 metres (160 ft) above sea level.

Dog restrictions: this is one long beach but each section has different dog rules, please check the signs at the point you enter.

Water samples are taken at regular intervals during the bathing season and at the end of the season the water quality is classified as: - Excellent: the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest - Good: generally good water quality - Sufficient: meets minimum standards - Poor: You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
