Lewes Castle
Lewes Castle is positioned at the highest point of Lewes, East Sussex, and was originally called Bray Castle.
Prior to the stone castle evidence exists of a wooden keep. The castle is a motte and bailey construction but unlike most it has two mottes. Built in 1060’s by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, and brother-in-law of William the Conqueror.
Open to the public, tickets are sold from Barbican House which is just opposite the entrance gate, and include access to the Barbican House Museum of Sussex archaeology and the Town Model. Various events take place at the castle, including two plays annually, children’s parties and weddings.

Saltdean beach is shingle between rock groynes backed by high chalk cliffs and at low tide, you have rock pools to explore. Located approximately 5 miles to the East of Brighton. Due to the coastal erosion on this part of the coast you have a lot of concrete defences visible, so this is not a beach to get back to nature

West Quay beach is a sand and shingle beach tucked behind the western breakwater. Newhaven Fort is located on top of the cliffs with tunnels that lead down to the beach. Facilities include parking, cafe, slipway.

Newhaven Harbour beach is a small sandy beach within the harbour breakwaters that is exposed at low tide. The beach shares parking, cafe and slipway with the West Quay beach the other side of the breakwater. We have no dog information for Newhaven Harbour beach.

Seaford Dane beach is one end of an approximate 4 miles of sand and shingle beach to the West of the the chalk cliffs of Seaford Head Nature Reserve. Facilities include car parking, food, toilets and zones in place for watersports.

Victoria Chalets are located at Marina on St Leonards beach. These ten seasonal wooden chalets are available for weekly hire from March – September. Hire starts at 14:00 on the commencing Saturday and terminates at 11:30 noon on the vacating Saturday. Beach huts should only be used during the hours of daylight and should never be used for overnight accommodation.

Anne of Cleves House is a 15th-century timber-framed Wealden hall house. It formed part of Queen Anne’s annulment settlement from King Henry VIII in 1541, although it is believed she never visited the property. Today the house shows a wide-ranging collection of furniture and artefacts of Sussex interest.
