At the Southend, the sea recedes over a mile from the beach at low tide, leaving large areas of mud flats. This meant large boats could not stop at Southend, and many potential visitors would travel past Southend and go to Margate or other resorts where docking facilities were better.
Southend needed a solution and the result is the longest pleasure pier in the world,ย Southend Pier which extends 1.34 miles (2.16 km) into the Thames Estuary.
The pier railway operates every day the pier is open, running the length of Southend Pier, and providing transport from the shore to the pier head.
