The Forest of Dean, situated between the rivers Wye and Severn in Gloucestershire, is a 35-square-mile stretch of ancient woodland that feels older than most places. The forest features thick coniferous and deciduous woods, as well as rivers and rolling hills. In Roman times, this was a major hunting area, and in Tudor times, the Oak was used for shipbuilding.
Throughout the Forest, you are welcome to explore, walk and cycle the many miles of signed forest roads. It’s an excellent spot for a day out or a weekend, and dogs are welcome on most public trails and picnic areas.
To access, driving is easiest. From Gloucester, follow the A40 and signs for Coleford. Parkingโs spread across the forest: Beechenhurst, Mallards Pike, and Cannop Ponds all have decent car parks. Bus services run from Gloucester and Chepstow into Coleford, and then you can walk or grab a local taxi if you need to reach deeper trails.
Toilets are located at main visitor centres, such as Beechenhurst and Cannop. Cafes and pubs in Coleford and Lydney, and the forest has lots of picnic spots with tables.
