Cathcart Square

Cathcart Square was the heart of Greenock back in the day for commercial, civic and religious activities:

  • The church, known locally as the ‘Toon Kirk’ was built in 1760 with its 146-foot high steeple added in 1787
  • The ornate Lyle central fountain was gifted to the town by Provost Abram Lyle in 1880
  • The Clydesdale Bank building, now known as The Square was built in 1899 by architect James Thomson
