Malham Cove is a natural limestone formation in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, England. It is a stunning example of limestone pavement on top, with a sheer cliff face about 80 meters (260 feet) high. Formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age more than 12,000 years ago, today, the cove is a dry cliff, as the water now flows underground.
Key features and attractions at Malham Cove include:
- Limestone Pavement: The top of Malham Cove features a striking limestone pavement, with its clints (blocks) and grikes (fissures) creating a unique and dramatic landscape. This pavement offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and is a significant geological feature.
- Cliff Face: Malham Cove’s imposing curved cliff face is a popular spot for rock climbers, with numerous routes across its surface. It’s also an impressive sight for non-climbers and provides a dramatic backdrop to the area.
- Walking and Hiking: Malham Cove is a popular starting point or highlight for many walks in the Yorkshire Dales. Trails leading up to the cove offer varying degrees of difficulty, catering to casual walkers and more serious hikers alike. The Pennine Way, a famous long-distance walking trail, also passes here.

Its iconic landscape has even caught the attention of filmmakers, serving as a filming location with probably the most famous being in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, where Harry and Hermione set up camp in a tent on the Limestone Pavement.
