Monk Bar

Monk Bar is one of the ancient gateways to the city of York in North Yorkshire.

Dating back to the early 14th century, it is a self-contained fortress with the city’s only working portcullis. Each floor within the building was capable of being defended – you can still see the ‘murder holes’ through which boiling water and oil could be rained down upon attackers!
