Midhowe is a large Neolithic chambered cairn. The name “Midhowe” comes from the spectacular Bronze Age broch that lies to the west of the tomb. Together, the broch and chambered cairn form part of a large complex of ancient structures on the shore of Eynhallow Sound that separates Rousay from Mainland, Orkney. Midhowe Broch was thought to be built somewhere between 200 BC and 200 AD and is located at the sea edge. Midhowe is funnel shaped, although only the bottom section remains today, with a double wall in between which had the stairway to the upper levels.
