Jarlshof

Jarlshof is an archeological site from prehistoric time in the south of the Shetland mainland. The site was excavated at the end of the 19^th century when storms ripped through the landscape and exposed some of the settlement stones.

It is perhaps the best-known site of this kind in Shetland and contains remains from 2500 BC all the way up to 1700 AD. Jarlshof has evidence and artefacts from human occupation in the Bronze Age, Iron Age as well as the Viking era. There was also a manor house, whose walls still remain, which was mentioned in a Sir Walter Scott novel from 1821.
