UK coastal staycations vs European beach getaway for this summer

With the summer months fast approaching, the debate on holiday destinations is underway in many UK households.

One of the most common choices holidaymakers have to make is whether to stay in the UK or head to the European mainland for a change. There are several factors to consider, making it a tough choice. Here are some tips on finding the perfect beach holiday this summer.

Why choose a UK staycation?

The UK has lots to boast about when it comes to coastal retreats. All along the coastline are stunning villages and beaches perfect for a relaxing retreat.

West Scotland is home to Achmelvich Beach, which is the perfect stop-off point if you are undertaking the North Coast 500. If you were in the south, Cornwall is packed full of beautiful spots, though it is worth taking hikes to some of the less accessible spots to avoid the summer crowds.

The main downside to holidaying at home is the weather. It is a common joke that the British weather can be unpredictable, but if you get a spell of hot weather, you can feel like you are in the Caribbean.

The appeal of European beach destinations

Where weather can be unpredictable in the UK, you can be more confident you will get reliable sunshine and warmth on a European beach break. Depending on where you go, average temperatures can vary, so you can pick a climate that better suits your preferences.

UK waters tend to be pretty cold, even in summer. But bathing in the Mediterranean Sea often feels like slipping into a nice bath, perfect for beating the heat. When the beach gets too much, the villages and resorts on the European coastline are perfect for grabbing some tasty food or doing a spot of shopping.

Comparing costs, convenience and travel times

Staycations often work out more affordably, as you are paying less for travel. You can keep costs down by opting for self-catered properties as well, which also gives you freedom to eat however you like. Holiday stress can also be reduced with no airports, security lines or gates to navigate.

When travelling, look at the overall times. Driving in the UK is pretty accessible, but you do face traffic in the summer months. With flying, the time in the air is one thing, but you will need to factor in airport times and transfers to hotels.

Travelling abroad, though, can be less stressful in its own way, as all-inclusive packages take the pressure away from administrative tasks. However, flying is an expensive mode of transport, so make sure you budget accordingly before booking.

Choosing the right destination for your beach break

Consider your priorities. Take into account the people attending, needs for activities, food options and overall experience.

If you are looking for a warm beach in a cultural haven, a classic Greece holiday may be the best option. However, a UK beach break provides a quieter, beautifully scenic break with less travel.
