Are there too many beach cafés in Devon?

We’ve been doing a round up of the beach cafés in England and have decided that there are potentially too many in Devon!

We all love Devon beaches and there’s nothing nicer than settling down to a great breakfast or lunch or just a decent cuppa when you’ve been on the beach all day. We’ve made a list, by county, and here’s Devon! Keep reading as each month we’ll be bringing you more beach café info.

1. Meadfoot Beach Café, Meadfoot Road, Torquay, Devon, TQ1 2LQ

Meadfoot Beach Café is in Torquay in Devon on Meadfoot Beach! This café offers stunning views out to sea and you can enjoy breakfast, snacks, drinks and homemade goodies on their lovely veranda!

And something else….A great spot for ramblers and photographers due to the spectacular scenery and the South West Coastal Path nearby.

2. The Beach Café, 6 Westbourne Terrace, Westward Ho!, Devon, EX39 1LL

Westward Ho! In North Devon offers great expanses of golden, sandy beach and a really good beach café where you can get freshly cooked, home made food and some really delicious cakes and treats!

3. The Pier House, Merley Road, Westward Ho!, Devon, EX39 1JU

The Pier House in Westward Ho! is perched on the cliff top overlooking Bideford Bay and Lundy Island, with Westward Ho’s sandy beach below.

What’s on the menu? This is a seafront bar and bistro offering great  British classics like ocean fresh seafood and juicy steaks.

4. Sands Café Bar, Saunton, Braunton, Devon, EX33 1LQ

Sands Café Bar is on Saunton Beach overlooking the sands and offers breakfast and light bites during the day and great bistro food at night from steak to pasta. It’s fully licensed so you can stop and enjoy a good wine and decent food.

5. The Winking Prawn Beach Café & BBQ, North Sands, Salcombe, Devon, TQ8 8LD

Situated on the North Sands in Salcombe, The Winking Prawn is always busy so get there early in high season! It’s set back from the beach just off the curve of the road and has lovely views. It’s very popular with walkers and those just looking for a snack or drink as well as families enjoying a full on feast after a day at the beach or exploring the local area. All their food is locally sourced and they focus on seafood and are famous for their Summer BBQ’s!

6. Beach House, South Milton Sands, Devon, TQ7 3JY

The Beach House is a stylish café serving breakfast and lunch and offering superb panoramic views over the golden beach of South Milton Sands. Known for great fish, fresh seafood and snacks to eat in or take away. The position is also great for walking on the South West Coastal Path so it’s perfect for a stroll before or after dining!

7.The Venus Café, Blackpool, Dartmouth, Devon, TQ6 0RG

Dartmouth is known for it’s sand and shingle beach at Blackpool Sands and the Venus Café is a bit of an icon there as they hold marriage and civil ceremonies there as well as serving superb food throughout the day!  They specialise in local, organic produce from seafood to scrumptious cakes and treats. They can cater for groups and gatherings up to around 90 guests.

8. Britannia @ the Beach, Beesands, Devon, TQ7 2EH

This café is locally known as ‘The Shack’ and is a combination of a traditional fishmonger, village store and a unique rustic BYO café!  They serve wholesome food like home made burgers and freshly caught seafood.  You’ll find the shack in the old fishing village of Beesands between Torcross and Hallsands. You’ll want to linger a while as the views across Start Bay are fantastic!

9. Barricane Beach Café, The Esplanade, Woolacombe, Devon, EX34 7DJ

Barricane Beach Café is right on the shingle beach and they’re well known for their amazing Sri Lankan curries! During the day they serve fresh breakfast and lunches and tasty snacks to beach goers and walkers.

Great views, wonderful food and just half a mile from Woolacombe looking out across the secluded cove of Barricane Bay.

10. Beachcomber Café, 1 Bank Terrace, Woolacombe, Devon, EX34 7BL

Enjoy the views over the three miles of sandy Woolacombe Beach from the café’s balcony. What’s on the menu? Breakfasts, light snacks and homemade cakes during the day. At night the café is transformed into a more romantic spot, serving grilled meat and fish, great BBQs and buffets.

11. Crab Shack, 3 Queen Street, Back Beach, Teignmouth, Devon, TQ14 9HN

The Crab Shack overlooks the small fishing harbour and sandy beach of Teignmouth and they actually have their own fishing boats which fish in the Channel for the freshly caught fish and seafood that they serve to you daily. The menu varies…. depending on the day’s catch!

12. Breakwater Bistro, Berryhead Road, Brixham, Devon, TQ5 9AF

Breakwater Bistro overlooks Brixham Harbour and is right on the beach. This is a light and airy café serving easy food and snacks during the day but superb seafood and local Devon meats in the evenings!
