Blackpool Illuminations cover just under 10 km (6 miles) of Blackpool’s iconic seafront, starting at Squires Gate and finishing at Red Bank Road. The lights are viewable this year for four months by a car trip along the seafront, a stroll along the promenade, or a tram journey.
The first actual display was staged in May 1912 to mark the royal visit made by Princess Louise to Blackpool. The results were so impressive the lights were shown again in the September of the same year, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Today, an estimated one million LED lights of various types and styles and more than 200 miles of cable and wiring are strung between the promenade poles and across the carriageway.
This can be a very busy period, particularly when driving, and also, the trams need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.
