Desmond Castle (Cork)
Desmond Castle is actually a tower house located in the town of Kinsale, Cork.
The castle was originally built as a Customs House in the early 1500s. In 1641 it was no longer a customs house and got converted into a naval prison, in the mid-1700’s after a big fire killing many prisoners it was turned into a gaol, then during the Irish Famine, it was re-purposed as a workhouse.
Since 1997, Desmond Castle has housed the International Museum of Wine, this exhibition tells the fascinating story of Ireland’s wine links with Europe and the wider world.
