Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes are part of a large sand dune complex located by Porthcawl on the south coast of Wales.
The sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr are the second highest in Europe and show off various stages of development, from bare sand to areas of dune woodland and scrub. The area is managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW), and it is designated as an SSSI because it gives a great habitat for a large and varied range of wildlife and plants.
Itโs popular for its wildlife and plants and famous as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ was filmed here. Kids love dune boarding here, and itโs a wonderful day out with the family, having a picnic and just enjoying the beach area and the dunes.
You have a large car park with toilets and well-trodden paths throughout the dunes. The nearby villages have a selection of shops and pubs.
