About Discover Rinsey Head
Located off the main tourist track between Porthleven and Praa Sands, Rinsey Head feels like one of those secret corners of Cornwall. It’s a place where rugged cliffs meet sea views, and the area’s mining past. Rinsey Head delivers a true sense of wild Cornish charm.
The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive is how untouched it feels. There’s a small National Trust car park just above the cliffs, from which a narrow lane leads down. From here, a network of footpaths spills out towards the headland, offering sweeping views across Mount’s Bay and the distant outline of The Lizard. The iconic Wheal Prosper engine house stands proudly above the cliffs โ a reminder of Cornwall’s industrial heritage and a brilliant photo stop for anyone with a love of history or landscape photography.
If you follow the path further down, you’ll find Rinsey Cove, also known as Porthcew Beach. This hidden sandy cove sits at the foot of the cliffs and feels wonderfully remote. It’s the kind of place where you might find only a handful of other visitors, even on a warm summer’s day. At low tide, soft golden sand appears between the rocks โ perfect for a picnic, a paddle, or a quiet moment with a book. Just keep in mind that access is via a steep path, and the sand can all but disappear at high tide, so timing your visit makes a difference.
For dog owners, Rinsey Head is a dream. Dogs are welcome all year round, and there’s plenty of space for them to stretch their legs, whether that’s on the coast path above or down on the beach below at low tide. The cliffs are high, though, so it’s best to keep dogs on the lead near the edges.
For nonโdog owners, the appeal is equally strong. Rinsey Head offers one of the most peaceful walks along the South West Coast Path. It’s also a great spot for spotting seabirds or just standing still for a few minutes to take in the sound of the waves.
There are no facilities at Rinsey Head, and that’s part of its charm. Bring a flask, a few snacks, and your sense of adventure. The nearest refreshments can be found in nearby Porthleven, where you’ll find pubs and cafes overlooking the harbour, or at Praa Sands, just a short drive or walk away.
If you enjoy walking, consider looping your visit into a longer circular route from Rinsey Head to Porthleven or Trewavas Head. These paths are wellโmarked and give an authentic taste of Cornwall’s coastal character โ dramatic cliffs, open skies, and the occasional sight of seals or even dolphins on a calm day.
Rinsey Head isn’t flashy or crowded. It’s simple, soulful, and wonderful. Whether exploring with your dog, your family, or simply by yourself, it’s the sort of place that reminds you why slowing down is worth it. Take your time here, wander, watch the tide, breathe the sea air, and you’ll leave feeling quietly restored.
