St Georges Island
St George’s Island is also known as Looe Island, a small island about a mile offshore from Looe in Cornwall. Owned and managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust charity.
The Island is approx. 22.5 acres (9 ha) in area and a mile (1.6 km) in circumference with the highest point being only 47 metres (154 ft).
The landing fees and other income is devoted to conserving the island’s natural beauty and providing facilities. Open during the summer to day visitors arriving by the Trust’s boat from Looe. A small visitor centre can provide you with a self-guided trail map.

You don’t need to spend ages figuring out why this cafe is called The Hidden Hut as it is a wooden hut next to Porthcurnick beach, which is itself an isolated beach. The cafe has a varied menu but has beautifully cooked food on an outdoor stove or in the indoor bakery oven. Note that as this is remote it has no telephone

Plaidy Beach is a sandy beach with rock pools although at high tide it disapears. It is about ½ mile from Looe beach along a nice footpath. Plaidy Beach is utilised by holiday makers staying at the Millendreath Holiday Village but as there are no facilities, toilets or car parking at Plaidy, it can be reasonably quiet. Looe lifeboat station was established in 1866 but then closed in 1930. The station was opened again in 1992 and now operates two inshore lifeboats. Station open daily whilst shop open daily between Easter and late December.

St Catherine’s Castle is one of a pair of small artillery forts, built by Thomas Treffry approximately 1540.
