Chesil Beach, also known as Chesil Bank, is one of the British coastline’s most striking and unique features. This impressive pebble beach stretches for about 18 miles (29 kilometres) along the coast of Dorset, from West Bay near Bridport to the Isle of Portland.
Chesil Beach is a barrier beach that forms part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The beach comprises pebbles that change in size due to tides from small at West Bay to large at Portland.
The beach and the Fleet Lagoon, a saline water body separated from the sea by the beach, provide various wildlife habitats. The area is a bird haven, with numerous species, including rare and migratory birds, spotted here.
Visiting Chesil Beach:
- Activities: Chesil Beach is popular for fishing, bird watching, and walking. The South West Coast Path runs along part of the beach, offering scenic walks with spectacular views of the Dorset coastline.
- Accessibility: Chesil Beach’s access varies along its length. Some sections are easily accessible via local roads and car parks, while others are more remote and only accessible on foot.
- Safety: The beach faces the full force of the Atlantic and can experience strong waves and undertows, making it unsuitable for swimming.
- Dogs: The beach is large and has some dog restrictions. Although dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, the beach from the Tank Teeth Boundary at Abbotsbury to the Portland Boundary Stone has restrictions and only allows dogs on leads to the seaward side of the beach from 1 September to 30 April.
- Chesil Beach Centre: Located by Fleet Lagoon, the centre offers educational resources about the beach’s wildlife and geology and a cafe.
Chesil Beach and the surrounding area are subject to conservation efforts to preserve the unique landscape and biodiversity. The site is managed to balance human activity with the needs of wildlife, particularly in terms of protecting bird nesting sites and managing visitor impact. At various times of the year, some areas restrict access due to the protection of nesting birds and you will need to follow instructions on local signage.
Visiting Chesil Beach offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the UK’s most distinctive natural features. Whether you’re interested in the dynamic forces that shape our coastline, the diverse species that inhabit these unique environments, or simply the raw beauty of an unspoiled natural setting, Chesil Beach provides a captivating and enriching experience. It’s a remarkable place where natural history and breathtaking scenery converge, making it a must-visit for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone fascinated by the natural world.
