Hengistbury Head is a headland jutting into the English Channel between Bournemouth and Christchurch, at the end is a spit that creates the narrow entrance to Christchurch Harbour.
Hengistbury Head Beach is a pebble beach below the imposing clay and ironstone cliffs. The Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve separates Poole Bay from Christchurch Bay and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
It is not so much a beach holiday location as a good place to explore and walk along gravel paths throughout the nature reserve. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Hengistbury Head and its beach, but please respect that this is a nature reserve.
Facilities include a pay-and-display car park, toilets, a cafe, and the Hengistbury Head Centre. Reaching the beach involves a pleasant walk from the Hengistbury Head car park or a short ferry ride from Mudeford Quay.
While in the area, we believe it is well worth visiting Mudeford Spit, just around the headland. The colourful beach huts add to the area’s charm and are iconic features of the landscape.
