Castle of St John (Dumfries and Galloway)

    The Castle of St John is an early 16th-century L-plan tower house, built by the Adairs of Kilhilt around 1510.

    Over the centuries it has been used as a home, a court, a police station, a military garrison, and a Victorian prison.

    The castle is now a museum.
