Glenkinchie Distillery
Glenkinchie Distillery is just under 15 miles from Edinburgh in Pencaitland.
This is the home of the Edinburgh Malt and you can enjoy the area and the exhibition as part of your tour of Scotland. There are not many places in Scotland that have this history. Here they saw Prince Charles Stuart reach power when his Highlanders defeated the Hanoverian forces in 1745 and illegal distilling was finally allowed.
Distilling in the area dates back to the 1700’s and although illegal, the area supported around four hundred such distilleries! Glenkinchie started in 1837 along with over 100 others but not many of them lasted and most of what they brewed wouldn’t have passed the rigorous demands of today’s whiskey connoisseurs!
