Drop Redoubt
The Drop Redoubt is one of the two linked forts on Dovers Western Heights. Linked to Citadel, by a series of dry moats. The artillery at the Redoubt faced mostly inland as it was constructed to defend against an invading force attempting to capture Dover from the rear.
The construction of the Redoubt was in two periods: the first being from 1804-1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, and the second from 1859-1864 following the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission.

Dover Harbour Beach is a sheltered shingle beach set within the harbour walls. Facilities at the beach include parking, promenade, toilets, cafe/restaurant, kiosks, shops and water sports centre. The beach is located in Dover and so has easy access to the facilities of the town.

Shakespeare Beach is the stretch of shingle beach to the west of Dover Harbour Admiralty Pier to the white chalk of Shakespeare Cliff. We have no dog information for Shakespeare beach.

St Margarets Bay beach is a mix of sand, pebbles and shingles under white chalk cliffs. The beach at St Margaret’s is famous for being the closest point to France and is often where Channel swimmers begin their 21-mile swim. Facilities at the beach include parking, toilets, a cafe and a slipway.

The Warren beach is just outside Folkestone, a sand and rocky beach backed by high chalk cliffs and a concrete promenade and sea defences. Facilities at the beach include promenade and parking.

Beach Hut on Tankerton beach just a few minutes walk from public toilets, cafes and local shops. Facilities include: balcony table/chairs, deck chairs, rugs, kettle, cutlery, crockery and books. Daily hire is from 9am to 10pm. Special rates available for longer hire periods including weekends and weekly hire. Sorry but we don’t allow pets.

The shaft has a triple spiral staircase in fortifications and was created as when working on Western Heights, it soon became apparent that troop would be slow between the hill top forts and the beach below.

Dover’s lifeboat has had several different locations over the years. The first lifeboat station was under the clock tower at the Prince of Wales Pier. Now sits beside a new station at Crosswall Quay in Dover’s Western Docks.
