Wookey Hole

Wookey Hole Caves are a series of limestone caverns on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset. These stunning natural wonders are part of the Wookey Hole complex, which includes the caves and a range of family-friendly attractions and activities. The caves hold significant historical, geological, and cultural importance, having been formed through the erosive action of the River Axe over millions of years.

On a visit, you can explore the caves through guided tours, illuminating the history, legends, and natural processes that created these underground landscapes. The caves feature remarkable stalactites, stalagmites, and clear underground pools, making them fascinating studies in cave geology. Legend has it that a witch was turned to stone within the caves, and a stalagmite resembling a figure is pointed out during tours as the “Witch of Wookey Hole.”

The caves’ constant temperature of 11 °C (52 °F) enables them to mature Cheddar cheese. The cave-aged Cheddar cheese is a particular highlight, and you can delve into the history of cheese-making with demonstrations and exhibits.

Beyond the natural and historical attractions, Wookey Hole offers a variety of family-oriented entertainment, including a circus show, adventure golf, a dinosaur valley, and places to eat and relax, making it a versatile destination for visitors of all ages.

Wookey Hole accommodates visitors of all ages. However, due to natural steps and uneven floors, access to the caves themselves may be limited for those with mobility issues.

The complex also includes a paper mill, where the waters of the River Axe drive the paper mill, which began operations circa 1610, although a corn grinding mill operated there as early as 1086.

For the more adventurous, parts of the Wookey Hole cave system are accessible to cavers. You can pay for a caving experience to venture into places visitors do not normally go. Instructors will guide you as you crawl, climb, and abseil through our underground adventure palace.
