About Kingsgate Bay Beach
Kingsgate Bay is cherished for its quiet, tucked-away charm. The bay is approximately 150 metres wide and is nestled between high, white chalk cliffs, providing a dramatic backdrop. At low tide, rock pools, sea caves, and exposed reef invite exploration. The cliffs shelter the bay, making it more peaceful and calm compared to more open beaches.
Unlike the busier neighbouring beaches, Kingsgate Bay sees fewer visitors due to its steep access and limited parking. That seclusion is part of its appeal, and a bonus is that Kingsgate Bay allows dogs off their lead at any time of the year.
Kingsgate Bay is ideal for swimming and paddling, with relatively calm waters protected by the surrounding cliffs. The beach also attracts kayakers and paddleboarders looking to explore the nearby sea caves and coastline.
Above the cliffs sits Kingsgate Castle, originally built in the 1760s by Lord Holland as part of his estate. The bay’s name, “Kingsgate”, is said to be linked to King Charles II’s landing there in 1683.
There are steep steps down the cliffs and no facilities once you are down there, but this does mean it is not as busy as the other Broadstairs beaches, although there is a pub on the cliff overlooking the bay.
It’s an ideal destination for those seeking a quieter, more natural beach experience on the beautiful Kent coastline.
