Walpole Bay beach is a long sandy beach with a promenade, plenty of rock and tidal pools to explore. It is worth checking the tide times before a visit as at high tide, the sand all but disappears.
The beach is most famous for its Grade II listed tidal pool which was opened in June 1937. The Walpole Bay Tidal Pool was built to combat the big tidal range allowing outdoor swimming for longer periods. The pool is one of the largest in the UK at 137m (450ft) long, 92m (300ft) wide at the seaward end and 167m (550ft) wide at the beach. There are walls on three sides with the beach acting as the fourth wall, a depth gradually increasing as you move away from the beach to just under 7ft at the seaward end wall. Please note that this tidal pool is cold so come prepared, there are no changing rooms and it does not have a lifeguard.
Facilities at the beach and pool include a lift, toilets, seasonal beach lifeguards, chalets for hire, mini-golf, putting, tennis and indoor bowls nearby. Close to the beach are a number of cafes and restaurants where you can find something to eat or drink. There are parking facilities at the beach as well as disabled access.
Dog Friendly Beach?
Walpole Bay beach between 1st May and 30th September where dogs are allowed on leads between 10am to 6pm.
Water samples are taken at regular intervals during the bathing season and at the end of the season the water quality is classified as: - Excellent: the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest - Good: generally good water quality - Sufficient: meets minimum standards - Poor: You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
