Ayre covers the north-eastern end of the Isle of Man. The word Ayre comes from Old Norse "eyrr" that means a shingle beach. The Point of Ayre is the closest point on the Isle of Man to the British mainland, being 26 kilometres (16 miles) south of Burrow Head in Scotland.
